What is Risperdal?

Risperdal is a widely-prescribed antipsychotic drug that is made by the Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals. The active ingredient contained in Risperdal is risperidone. In 2004, the risperidone patent expired, allowing Teva Pharmaceuticals to manufacture and distribute a generic formulation of Risperdal. Risperdal was originally intended for elderly patients to help treat dementia, but studies indicated that Risperdal could also help children with autism and bipolar disorder. In children, the FDA did not approve Risperdal until 2006, and more recently Risperdal has been alleged to increase breast tissue in young boys, a condition known as gynecomastia.

Risperdal and Diabetes

Risperdal has recently been linked to type 2 diabetes, prompting the Food & Drug Administration to request that J&J issue a warning to patients and prospective patients. In a recent study, Risperdal increased a user’s chances of developing type 2 diabetes by about 50% compared with older forms of antipsychotic medications.

Signs and symptoms of Risperdal diabetes may include:

  • Increased thirst and frequent urination
  • Increased hunger
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing sores or frequent infections
  • Areas of darkened skin

Risperdal Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS)

Risperdal has also been linked to Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), a life-threatening medical condition involving muscle rigidity, irregular blood pressure, and irregular pulse. NMS is characterized by:

  • High fever
  • Stiffness of the muscles
  • Altered mental status (paranoid behavior)
  • Autonomic dysfunction
  • Blood pressure fluctuation
  • Excessive sweating
  • Excessive secretion of saliva

In most cases of neuroleptic malignant syndrome, intensive care is required. If Risperdal is suspected to be the cause of the disease, the drug will more than likely be discontinued, and the fever will be treated. A muscle relaxant may be prescribed. Dopaminergic medications, such as a dopamine agonist, have been reported to be useful in some cases.
